Aligning Transformation Efforts With Business Strategy

A business unit within a large multinational financial services company had already invested significantly in a transformation effort before fully defining the strategy that was meant to guide it. As funding neared exhaustion and several initiatives approached cost overruns, leadership needed a more disciplined and aligned path forward. 

The transformation had evolved through a bottom-up approach, creating a collection of individual projects that lacked cohesion and clear linkage to overarching business goals. A newly introduced strategy pointed the business in a different direction, which exposed the misalignment between the current work and the desired future state. 

Without strategic alignment, the organization risked continuing to invest in initiatives that did not support business priorities, while also increasing the likelihood of delays, overruns, and stakeholder fatigue. The lack of an integrated transformation structure made it harder to measure progress, manage resources, and sustain organizational support.  

A temporary stop of the existing efforts allowed the team to analyze the workplans and subsequently introduce a new strategy across the organization. We then developed a revised portfolio of projects directly linked to that strategy and implemented a more rigorous project management approach with closer monitoring of results as the new transformation program was launched. 

The relationship between strategy and outcomes became much clearer across the organization, helping rally support around the transformation and its intended results. The stronger project management foundation improved transparency, supported on-budget performance, and enabled more timely completion of key initiatives.
